The full rundown on Colwick Country Park Lakes

Colwick Country Park sits roughly 4 km east of Nottingham city centre and is managed by Nottingham City Council. It’s a handy-looking spread of waters, with the 24-acre West Lake, 65-acre Main Lake, Old Trout Lake, The Loop, the Marina and part of the River Trent all forming part of the park.

West Lake is the headline coarse lake for carp anglers. Carp are reported to reach approximately 40 lb, and there are other coarse species in there too. It’s open all year, so there’s scope for proper carp sessions outside the usual river and canal close-season dates.

Old Trout Lake is another all-year option. It was formerly trout-fishing-only but is now open for coarse fishing. The lake is lightly fished and recovering from an oxygen-crash fish kill in 2021, so it’s one for anglers who fancy a quieter, more patient approach rather than charging in expecting instant action.

The Loop is described as holding smaller silver fish and pike, making it a different kettle of fish from West Lake. The Marina and River Trent offer a broader mix, including carp, roach, rudd, bream, chub, perch, pike and barbel. Plenty to keep the float, feeder and lure-minded angler busy.

Season dates matter here. The River Trent, The Loop and the Marina are closed from 15 March through 15 June inclusive. West Lake and Old Trout Lake can be fished all year round. Tickets are checked by on-site rangers and volunteer bailiffs, so keep everything bob on.

Tickets are sold at the kiosk at the eastern end of the park, off River Road. There’s no online fishing booking system advertised, so this is a turn-up-at-the-kiosk setup. The kiosk is open 09:00-16:00, while the park itself is free to enter.

Parking is straightforward enough, with a free car park at the end of Racecourse Road, NG2 4BH. The River Road car park has a £2 cash barrier charge and operates 09:00-16:00. Portable toilets are currently available 24/7 while the main block is shut for repairs. Dogs are welcome, but remember the West Lake has organised open-water swimming from April to October, and swimming elsewhere or outside those sessions isn’t permitted.
