The lowdown

Avalon Fisheries sits on Shapwick Road in Westhay, Somerset, BA6 9TT. The big thing here is choice, but not three lakes doing exactly the same job. Moors is the pleasure and match water, Heath is aimed at specimen carp anglers, and Fenwood is a limited-ticket syndicate for experienced anglers. That makes choosing the right lake your first bit of preparation.

The full rundown on Avalon Fisheries

Avalon Fisheries sits on Shapwick Road in Westhay, Somerset, BA6 9TT. The big thing here is choice, but not three lakes doing exactly the same job. Moors is the pleasure and match water, Heath is aimed at specimen carp anglers, and Fenwood is a limited-ticket syndicate for experienced anglers. That makes choosing the right lake your first bit of preparation. A quick mixed-bag outing and an overnight hunt for a lump have quite different arrangements.

Moors is the straightforward option for a day on the bank. It covers five acres, has 48 platform pegs and typically runs around six feet deep. The mix includes carp, tench, bream, skimmers, roach, rudd, chub, perch and pike. There’s proper variety there if you enjoy fishing for bites rather than putting everything into one species. Pleasure anglers can turn up and pay the bailiff, so there’s no advance-booking faff for that sort of visit.

Heath changes the brief. This two-acre specimen carp lake has 16 pegs, with 14 available for overnight fishing and two reserved for day sessions. Carp exceeding 30lb give it an obvious pull if a bigger fish is the aim. That’s a reason to choose it, not a promise of a PB. Both day and overnight sessions must be booked online beforehand, and overnight bookings run noon to noon. Get the session sorted before packing the bivvy.

The ticket options reflect those different jobs. Moors has adult and concession day tickets, plus evening tickets after 4pm. Heath offers adult day fishing and sessions from 24 through to 120 hours, all with a maximum of two rods. Match organisers should speak to Vic about Moors and confirm the peg charge: the lake page and Site Information give different figures. Heath day anglers should also check their departure time, because its booking terms differ from the general daytime hours.

A couple of practical rules deserve attention before your nets go in the car. Nets must arrive dry and be dipped on arrival and departure. On Moors, keepnets are allowed only for silvers from October to March, with carp released immediately; from April to September, keepnets are prohibited. Heath has one angler per peg and allows bivvies rather than tents. Overnight anglers must be at least 18, while under-16s fishing Heath by day need an accompanying adult.

Fenwood is a separate proposition again: limited-ticket syndicate access, aimed at experienced anglers, rather than another turn-up day water. For most casual visitors, the useful decision is therefore Moors versus Heath. Choose Moors for mixed species and flexible pleasure fishing; choose Heath when specimen carp and a booked session are the point. Keep those booking, net and age rules bob on, confirm the couple of conflicting details, and you can plan around the fishing you actually want.
