The full rundown on Longfield Lake

Longfield Fishery sits near Wraysbury, close to Laleham and Staines-upon-Thames. It’s a private syndicate rather than a day-ticket venue, so access is controlled through membership and management. Current membership is at capacity, with the waiting list available by invitation or recommendation only. In other words, this isn’t one for turning up at the gate hoping for a cheeky session.

There are two secluded big-carp waters to get your head around: Road Lake at approximately 3 acres and Fox Pool at approximately 4 acres. Road Lake has 13 designated swims, while fishing on both lakes is from the swims provided. With waters of this size, a bit of homework before the first trip is bob on. Ask the bailiff about known areas, recent form, watercraft expectations and which rules apply to your planned stay.

Road Lake contains carp, tench and other coarse fish. The carp are reported to reach 51 lb, including a 51 lb common, while the venue record for mirror carp stands at 43 lb. There are also tench to 10 lb, so it’s not just a case of sitting it out for one target. A tidy bait approach, accurate presentation and keeping disturbance down should be high on the list when planning your swim.

Fox Pool is the slightly larger lake and, according to the official site, holds approximately 90 or more fish. That includes at least two mirrors over 40 lb, at least one common over 40 lb and approximately eight other fish over 35 lb. The listed venue records include a 43 lb 12 oz mirror and a 48 lb 2 oz common. Proper lumps, then, but the relatively compact water means every bit of preparation matters. Take time to understand the swim, identify likely features and get clipped up carefully rather than lobbing it about.

This is a controlled, rules-led syndicate setup. Boats and bait boats aren’t allowed, apart from management boats, and wading or bringing waders onto the site is prohibited. Pre-baiting is banned throughout the season, while loose feed is limited to boilies, hemp and sweetcorn. You’ll also need a minimum 42-inch landing net and a cradle-style unhooking mat. Bring the right kit from the off, as there’s no sense arriving with gear that can’t be used.

Stay limits and rod limits need checking before you set off. Road Lake has a maximum stay of two consecutive nights, with three potentially allowed from 1 December to the end of February at the head bailiff’s discretion; its 48-hour rule continuously applies. Fox Pool has a 72-hour rule from 1 November to 28 February. Both lakes allow two rods from 1 June to 31 October and three from 1 November to 28 February. Secure parking and toilet facilities are available at Road Lake, and the entrance gate must be kept locked.
