The full rundown on Worcester Angling Society Lakes
Worcester Angling Society has been on the go since 1838, so there’s a proper old-school club feel to this collection of waters. The society controls several river stretches and one principal pool near Worcester, giving anglers a choice of stillwater and running-water fishing. It’s a handy spread if you fancy switching things up, from a quiet mixed fish session to a more mobile river wander with a barbel or chub in mind.
McCowans Pool is the main stillwater option. Tucked away at Brockamin near Leigh, Worcestershire, it’s a natural pool of roughly two thirds of an acre. The society bought it in 1999 and it has since had extensive renovation work. Carp, roach, rudd, tench and bream are all listed, so there’s plenty of scope for float fishing, light feeder work or a more patient approach. A nice little mixed fish water, rather than a one-trick puddle.
The River Teme gives the river angler around three miles of society-controlled fishing. It’s noted for barbel and chub, while Pard House Farm is also noted for grayling. Non-members can get £15 day permits for the Lower Teme above Old Powick Bridge, Leigh Water and Pard House Farm, with weekly permits costing £35 where offered. Take a sensible all-round river kit, then ask for the latest advice on which stretches are fishing well and how the levels are behaving before you head off.
West Diglis adds a society-controlled stretch of the River Severn, with a cracking list of named species: barbel, chub, bream, pike, zander, roach, perch, dace and bleak. Non-members can buy a £15 day permit, or a £35 weekly permit where offered. It’s also the only society water where night fishing is allowed, but check the current arrangements before planning an after-dark session. Everywhere else runs from dawn until dusk where night fishing is prohibited.
There are also three River Wye beats at Bishopswood. Lower Bishopswood and Upper Bishopswood each extend roughly three quarters of a mile, while Lower Bishopswood holds chub, roach, barbel and pike. Lower Bishopswood day permits are £20, weekly permits are £35, and annual permits are £50 for coarse and game fishing or £45 for coarse fishing only. Before travelling, check exactly which beat your permit covers and sort the paperwork in advance.
This is one of those venues where getting the admin bob on matters. Day permits must be bought before fishing, with no pay-on-the-bank option; the society points anglers towards Swimbooker and other authorised arrangements, so check its current website or Facebook instructions first. You’ll need a current Environment Agency licence, and it’s rod-and-line fishing only. Coarse fish must stay in the water and can’t be used as bait. Barbless hooks are compulsory on the society pools, and at McCowans all nets are currently banned, with nets supplied for anglers to use. Pack light, tidy your peg properly, and ask the bailiff or club contact about the best current approach before clipping up.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish McCowans Pool
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
rudd
Floating baits and shallow float for rudd
Rudd feed high in the water, often near reeds and lilies on warm days. Fish up in the water to them, not on the bottom.
- A light waggler set 1–2ft deep with a single maggot or caster on a size 18.
- Loose-feed little and often to bring them up.
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish River Teme
barbel
Pellet and boilie for the lake barbel
Lake barbel feed hard and fight harder, and this lake runs alongside the river. Use a strong rod and line, and rest them properly in the net before release.
- Halibut pellet or small boilie over a bed of pellet.
- Strong hooklink and a size 10–12 hook.
- Never hold barbel out of water long — keep them in the net until they've recovered.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.

River Teme

- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Worcester Angling Society offers a proper mix of club-controlled river fishing around Worcestershire, plus the tidy little McCowans Pool near Leigh. Day permits are available on selected waters, but you’ll need to sort your permit before fishing.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
