River Wharfe at Wray Wood, Boston Spa

Wray Wood is a proper 1,200-yard coarse-fishing stretch on the River Wharfe near Boston Spa, run by Bingley Angling Club. It’s a members’ water with a cracking head of barbel, plus big chub and perch to keep things interesting.

River Aire – Kildwick to Steeton

A cracking 650-metre Aire beat between Kildwick and Steeton, run by Bradford City Angling Association. It’s a quiet, underfished stretch aimed mainly at fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling, with steep banks, quick water and a bit of effort needed to get in.

Kilnsey Angling Club — River Wharfe beats at Kilnsey and Upper Wharfedale
River Wharfe · Day ticket or members
A cracking chunk of Upper Wharfedale water, with Kilnsey Angling Club beats around Kilnsey, Kettlewell, Starbotton, Hubberholme and Beckermonds. Expect proper upland scenery, streamy runs, deep pools and slow glides, with wild trout above Kettlewell Bridge and annually stocked water below it.

Barton Court Fishery is a cracking River Kennet fly-fishing venue in Kintbury, with more than 3 miles through Berkshire’s water meadows. It covers the main river, carriers and side streams, with wild brown trout the headline target.

A proper club-controlled stretch of the Wharfe through Otley, running from above Otley Bridge down to Caley Lodge on Pool Road. It’s varied flowing water with trout and grayling the main targets, plus a few other Wharfe favourites in the mix.

Aldermaston – River Kennet

A proper broad, deep and powerful mile of natural Kennet at Aldermaston, running down to Padworth Mill. It’s Newbury Angling Association water, with bends, scoured holes, a few slacks and some good barbel in the mix.

Towpath Fishery — River Lee Navigation, Hardmead Lock to Stanstead Lock

A proper 1,600-metre towpath-side stretch on the River Lee Navigation, running from above Hardmead Lock to the boating-marina gate above the Broadwater at Stanstead Lock. Day tickets are available on the bank, with club members fishing free.

River Kennet – Brimpton Beat

Brimpton Beat runs from Brimpton Weir to Kings Bridge on the River Kennet, with Wasing Estate looking after the fishing through Wasing Fisheries. It’s a proper rural Kennet-valley stretch, with weirs, bridges, backwaters and water-meadow character.

Leasey Bridge Fishery — River Lea

Leasey Bridge is a cracking little upper Lea fishery near Wheathampstead, with roughly 500 yards of shallow, intimate river and a mature backwater. Verulam Angling Club runs the stretch, with proper mixed coarse fishing and some lovely bonus fish in the backwater.

Warren Beat is a secluded River Kennet stretch on Wasing Estate, running from Kings Bridge to the Metal Bailey Bridge. It sits within the River Kennet & Enborne Syndicate and is members-only, with guest permits available if booked ahead.

Marford Farm — River Lea

Marford Farm is one of Verulam Angling Club’s most popular River Lea fisheries, tucked beneath Wheathampstead about five miles north of St Albans. It’s a proper two-part stretch, with tidy pegged swims on the Short Walk and a wilder, more searching Long Walk.

Benham Park is a proper cracking bit of the Kennet near Marsh Benham, just west of Newbury. It’s fly fishing country, with broad main-river glides, deep pools and some lovely, tighter carrier-stream water.

Kings Weir Weir Pool is the day-ticket section of Kings Weir Fishery on the Old River Lea in Hertfordshire. It’s a flowing, weir-affected pool with nine marked swims and some properly tasty specimen fish in it.

Dalston Beat, River Kennet

Dalston Beat is a private, secluded River Kennet stretch on Wasing Estate, running from Bailey Bridge to the start of the Rowbarge Pub Garden. It’s syndicate water with weir pools, quick races and swirling eddies — proper varied river fishing.

Carthagena Fishery — River Lee section and weirpool

Carthagena Fishery gives you roughly three-quarters of a mile of coarse river fishing on the River Lee, plus a proper deep weirpool and mill stream at Carthagena Lock. It’s a cracking Hertfordshire venue, particularly noted for specimen barbel, chub and bream.

Hungerford Fishery – Main River Kennet (Beats 1–10)

Hungerford Fishery’s Main River Kennet runs across ten private beats from Chilton Foliat downstream to Avington. It’s traditional chalk-stream water, managed by the Town and Manor of Hungerford, with access for registered Commoners and paying rods.

Feildes Weir — River Lea weir pool and towpath section

Feildes Weir is a proper mixed-coarse bit of the River Lea, with a deeper, quicker weir pool and towpath-side fishing below the lock. It’s jointly run by Ware Angling Club and Hertford Angling Club as part of the Towpath Fishery.

Avington Estate Fishery — River Kennet and Denford Fishery

Avington Estate Fishery and Denford Fishery give you about six miles of wild, clean chalk-stream water on the Middle Kennet and its tributaries. It’s predominantly a game fishery, with wild brown trout, grayling and a cracking mayfly hatch.

Hertford Old River Lea is a narrow, winding bit of the original non-navigable Lea, with good depth after recent dredging. It’s a proper mixed coarse fishery with some bigger chub and barbel tucked around the deeper holes and overhanging branches.

River Kennet, Sulhamstead Fishery

A cracking little CALPAC fishery near Sulhamstead, with roughly 1,500 yards split between a medium-to-fast River Kennet meadow section and a quiet, no-flow canal stretch. It’s open to members and day-ticket anglers, with the canal often coming into its own when the river is in flood.

Finding somewhere to fish near you

Around Nottingham, for example, you'll find canal stretches, the tidal-free middle Trent and plenty of commercial lakes within a short drive.
Every listing tells you the stuff you actually need before you load the car: what's in each lake or stretch, whether it's a day ticket, club or syndicate water, the house rules and what a ticket costs when we last checked. Rules and prices change, so always give the fishery or club a quick shout before you go.
Rivers, canals and stillwaters fish completely differently. Lakes reward a bit of watercraft and steady feeding; rivers are all about flow, depth and level, so we show live river levels where we can. Use the water-type and fish filters to narrow it down, then open a venue for the lake-by-lake or stretch-by-stretch lowdown.
