The full rundown on Theale Fisheries

Theale Fisheries is tucked away in secluded countryside beside the River Kennet, near Theale in Berkshire. The complex covers more than 80 acres and is made up of three mature gravel-pit waters: Island Lake, Theale 1 and Theale 2.

For day-ticket anglers, Island Lake is the one to look at. It covers approximately 2.8 acres, has a large island and 15 purpose-built, low-level swims. Ticket numbers are kept tight, with a maximum of eight session tickets and just two daylight tickets at one time. Nice and peaceful, rather than shoulder-to-shoulder chaos.

The fishing is carp-focused, with the stock managed with fish welfare as a priority. The island should give the water a few different angles, while those low-level swims ought to make getting the rods in position fairly straightforward. It looks suited to a quiet session where keeping things tidy and accurate matters.

Theale 1 is the big-water option, covering more than 20 acres with 26 purpose-built swims on the main lake and five additional day-only swims in the snag area. It holds mirror and common carp exceeding 40lb, including the reported 51lb 14oz mirror Whitetips and common number 47 at 42lb 12oz.

It is not all about carp, either. Theale 1 is an established tench water, with fish commonly reported at 5-8lb and some larger. There is also a crayfish population and an ongoing trapping programme, plus an otter fence protecting the lake.

The ticketing is properly organised. Everything must be booked and paid for online in advance, with no bank-side ticket sales. Island Lake offers daylight fishing or 23-hour sessions, including night fishing, and exclusive bookings are available on specified dates. All tickets start at 09:00, with arrival from 08:30 for equipment disinfection.

There is a firm set of fish-care and tackle rules, so arrive prepared. Large knotless nets and padded mats are compulsory, equipment must be clean and dry, and the required rigs, hook patterns and mainline specifications need checking before setting off. The fishery is roughly half a mile from Theale Station and two miles from M4 junction 12, though the nearest postcode is only a navigation aid.
