The full rundown on Walthamstow Reservoirs
Walthamstow Fishery sits at Walthamstow Wetlands, just off Forest Road in Greater London. The entrance is opposite the Ferry Boat Inn, and the site is roughly 15 minutes from central London. Proper handy if you fancy getting a bend in the rod without a massive trek.
Thames Water operates the fishery, which forms part of a large reservoir complex. The wider Walthamstow Reservoirs are commonly described as 10 reservoirs, while Thames Water says the complex contains 12 fisheries. The named waters include coarse reservoirs, trout waters and East Warwick Reservoir.
For coarse anglers, Reservoirs 1, 2 and 3 are the main targets. Reported species include carp, bream, roach, rudd, tench, perch and pike, so there is a decent mixed-bag spread. Reported specimen fish include carp over 40 lb, bream over 16 lb and pike over 20 lb — proper lumps if you happen across one on the munch.
The setup is flexible. Day-ticket anglers can pay on arrival at the ranger’s lodge, and tickets cover up to three rods on the coarse day and evening options. There are also 24-hour tickets, season permits and a stock-pond ticket, giving regulars plenty to play with. Under-16s fished free on the 2021 coarse day ticket when accompanied by an adult.
Fly anglers have Reservoirs 4 and 5, with rainbow trout stocked into the fly-fishing waters. Reservoir 4 is approximately 30 acres and Reservoir 5 around 41 acres. East Warwick Reservoir is approximately 42 acres, fly-only and catch-and-release, and is generally available from 1 September to 31 May.
Opening is normally during daylight hours, although anglers should call the ranger for exact current times. Night fishing is advertised for the first and third weekends of each month, with a discount on night-fishing tickets for season-ticket members. There are some accessible fishing spots, free parking and a clear on-site safety setup.
Do bear in mind the basics before clipping up. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required. Alcohol is prohibited, and only guide and assistance dogs are allowed. With coarse, fly and night options all on one site, Walthamstow is a bob-on choice for London anglers after a flexible reservoir session.

How we'd fish Reservoir 1
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
rudd
Floating baits and shallow float for rudd
Rudd feed high in the water, often near reeds and lilies on warm days. Fish up in the water to them, not on the bottom.
- A light waggler set 1–2ft deep with a single maggot or caster on a size 18.
- Loose-feed little and often to bring them up.
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.

trout
Fly fishing for the trout
Stocked lake trout cruise and feed up in the water, so you need to find the depth they're at. Start just under the surface and go deeper if nothing's happening.
- A 9ft 6–7 weight rod with a floating line covers most days; carry an intermediate or sinking line for cold or bright spells.
- Early season and cold days: lures like a Cat's Whisker, Blob or Damsel, pulled back in steady strips.
- Warmer days with fish rising: buzzers, Diawl Bachs or a dry fly fished slowly, or static under an indicator.
- Count your fly down (5, 10, 15 seconds) and change depth till you get a pull — then repeat that count.
- Use 6–8lb fluorocarbon tippet, and check the fishery's rules on catch-and-release, bag limits and barbless hooks before you start.

Tips & guides worth reading
How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
Reservoir 1
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.

bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
