Hartley Lands Fishery

Hartley Lands has six lakes and a pond, with everything from beginner-friendly carp fishing to a proper specimen hunt. Angler limits on four waters, mixed coarse options and selected night fishing give you plenty to choose from.

“7.7/10 — Advertised specimen carp and a broad mixed coarse line-up offer plenty of appeal, though these are not catch guarantees.”

The full rundown on Hartley Lands Fishery

Hartley Lands Fishery sits on Swattenden Lane in Cranbrook, Kent, TN17 3PS. It’s a day-ticket complex with six lakes and one pond, and the big attraction is choice. You can plan a session around specimen carp, go for a mixed coarse day or pick a water described as suitable for beginners. We haven’t fished it ourselves, so this is a guide to what’s advertised, not a tale of lumps we’ve landed.

For the carp angler, Bramley, Nick’s and Pear Tree give you three different starting points. Bramley advertises 120 carp from 10lb to over 38lb, while Nick’s advertises 240 from 7lb to over 39lb. Pear Tree advertises a biggest fish of 37lb. Those figures are the fishery’s claims, not promises of a PB, but they explain why these waters will catch the eye of anyone after a bigger carp.

The swim numbers deserve a look before you book. Bramley has 12 swims but allows eight anglers; Nick’s has 17 swims and a ten-angler limit; Pear Tree has eight swims for a maximum of six anglers. Henniker takes things smaller still, with just two swims for two anglers and an advertised ten carp from 23lb to over 38lb. That’s a very different proposition from choosing a mixed coarse water, so pick your session accordingly.

Away from that specimen line-up, Reservoir offers 18 swims and water reaching 12ft deep. Its advertised mix includes carp, ghost carp, koi, roach, perch, bream, tench, rudd and gudgeon. Finches has 11 swims, reaches 9.5ft and holds tench, perch, roach, bream, crucian carp and koi. The fishery describes Finches as fishing well throughout the year. Samson, meanwhile, has 20 swims, depths to 7ft and carp to over 9lb, with beginners specifically catered for in its description.

There’s a useful practical distinction between booking your fishing and choosing your peg. You can book through the website, Swimbooker or by phone, but swims are first-come, first-served rather than allocated at booking. Night fishing is permitted on Bramley, Nick’s, Pear Tree, Henniker and Reservoir. Overnight gates stay locked and departures are emergency-only, so don’t plan a cheeky late-night trip out. Payments are also non-refundable and non-transferable: get your dates straight before committing.

Kit-wise, keep it to two rods, pack barbless hooks and leave the bait boat at home. Nets, slings and mats need to arrive dry and undergo disinfection, and every angler needs a carp-care kit. Toilets, parking and disabled facilities are listed, while Reservoir specifically has gravel swims and a surrounding gravel path. Showers appeared in an August 2022 advert, but current availability isn’t confirmed. If accessibility or a shower makes or breaks your trip, have that conversation before booking rather than banking on it.
