Hawkhurst Fish Farm
Hawkhurst Fish Farm has a proper spread of fishing, from beginner-friendly Junior Lakes to book-ahead carp and catfish waters. Pick your lake carefully: tickets, booking arrangements and junior access vary across the site.
“7.6/10 — Named carp and catfish waters, mixed coarse options and larger fish claims provide plenty of fishing interest, without implying guaranteed catches.”

The lowdown
Hawkhurst Fish Farm, on Hastings Road in Hawkhurst, Kent, isn’t a one-lake, one-style sort of place. There’s carp and catfish fishing, mixed coarse fishing, a Match Lake and three Junior Lakes ponds, plus a members-only Specimen Lake. That gives you plenty of choice, but it also means a little homework before loading the car. The booking arrangements aren’t the same everywhere, and neither are the age limits.
- 7 lakes: Main Lake, Dove Lake, Four Trees, Quarry, Match Lake, Junior Lakes, Specimen Lake
- Fish: carp, catfish, tench, roach, perch, pike
- Tickets from: Main Lake — Main Lake: 12-hour fishing, 7am–7pm, costs £25 adult or £20 junior; 24 hours costs £40 adult or £35 junior.

The full rundown on Hawkhurst Fish Farm
Hawkhurst Fish Farm, on Hastings Road in Hawkhurst, Kent, isn’t a one-lake, one-style sort of place. There’s carp and catfish fishing, mixed coarse fishing, a Match Lake and three Junior Lakes ponds, plus a members-only Specimen Lake. That gives you plenty of choice, but it also means a little homework before loading the car. The booking arrangements aren’t the same everywhere, and neither are the age limits. Choose the water around the session you actually want, rather than assuming one ticket covers the lot.
Main Lake is the bigger of the two clearly sized carp-and-catfish session waters, covering 4 acres. It has 14 swims but allows a maximum of 11 anglers. Dove Lake covers 2 acres, with eight swims, a six-angler limit and depths reaching approximately 8ft. Both hold common carp, mirror carp and catfish, and both offer 12-hour and 24-hour sessions. Main also had a 110lb catfish stocked in February 2024. That’s a stocking claim, mind, not a promise that a lump will be waiting for you.
Four Trees offers another option for an overnight trip, on three-quarters of an acre with four fishable jetties. Its species list is a cracking mix: carp, catfish, tench, roach, perch and pike. All sessions need booking ahead. There’s one important wrinkle for families, though: its lake page says anglers must be 14 or older, while the general rules give a lower limit. Don’t chance it with a junior booking; get the fishery to confirm which restriction applies before paying.
Quarry keeps things to day-ticket fishing, with carp and catfish, 12 jetties and depths reaching 12ft. Parking beside some of those jetties may make the day easier for anglers with limited mobility, although that isn’t a blanket accessibility promise for every peg. Booking is strongly recommended here. If you arrive without one, speak to the bailiff before setting up. It’s a different proposition from the overnight waters, so don’t plan a cheeky extension into the night.
For a mixed coarse day or an organised match, Match Lake covers just over an acre and holds carp exceeding 12lb alongside other coarse fish. Casual day anglers don’t need to book, but an exclusive match can reserve the lake, so checking first saves a wasted journey. The Junior Lakes are three separate ponds with carp to 10lb, tench, roach and perch. Rod and net hire are available there, with bait sold separately. Their winter closure is worth checking before promising anyone a fishing trip.
Finally, Specimen Lake is members-only: approximately 4 acres, six swims and no more than four anglers. The fishery lists common and mirror carp over 40lb, and applicants need at least five years’ carp-fishing experience. It’s clearly a different route from a casual day ticket. We haven’t fished Hawkhurst, so there’s no pretend advice about banker swims or magic baits here. The useful starting point is matching your experience, company and available time to the right lake.

Are bait boats allowed?
We haven't seen a bait-boat rule listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Do I need barbless hooks?
Most UK fisheries prefer barbless or micro-barbed hooks — ask on arrival if unsure.

It depends — Day anglers need not book, but an exclusive match may have reserved the lake.
Is it suitable for disabled anglers?
We haven't seen disabled access listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Do I need a rod licence?
Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.

How we'd fish Main Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
catfish
Big hookbaits after dark for the cats
Catfish come out at night and like strong smells. A big halibut pellet or fish-based bait over a small bed of pellet is the usual approach.
- Fish strong — 20lb+ line and a big strong hook.
- Use an unhooking mat and a big net; cats are long and heavy.
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.

How we'd fish Dove Lake
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.

Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.

Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

How we'd fish Junior Lakes
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.

Tips & guides worth reading
How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.

Dove Lake
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.

tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
