The full rundown on Frisby Lakes Fishery

Frisby Lakes Fishery is a cracking 48-acre gravel pit near Melton Mowbray, with up to 50 swims to get your head around. Carp are the main pull, with fish over 32 lb on the cards, but it’s not just a chuck-and-wait carp venue. The wider mix includes tench, bream, pike, zander, perch, roach and rudd, so there’s plenty to keep different sorts of anglers happy.

The Point is one of the handier areas, with eight swims including some doubles and car access right to the Point swims. That’ll suit anyone bringing plenty of kit, planning a longer session, or simply wanting to keep the faff of shifting gear to a minimum. Carp are the headline here, while the broader coarse-stock mix gives you other options when the fish aren’t playing ball. Point pegs need booking in advance, so get that sorted before loading the motor.

Woodlands adds another seven swims around the gravel pit. The exact swim features and individual stock details aren’t published, which means a bit of watercraft and a good look from the bank will be important. Don’t just pile into the first peg you see. Have a proper wander where allowed, watch for signs of fish, and ask the fishery what’s been doing recently before clipping up.

The Island is aimed at anglers planning more than a quick day session. There are up to seven swims, with a minimum stay of 48 hours, and a boat lift costs £10. That’s a fair bit of fishing time, so bring the kitchen sink — within reason — and make sure the bivvy, power, bait and spare bits are all sorted before you arrive. Island swims need advance booking, and the 24-hour ticket and minimum-stay arrangement indicate overnight fishing.

Facilities are bob on for a longer trip, with showers, toilets, car parking, disabled access and an on-site bait and tackle shop. There’s also telephone and WhatsApp contact, handy for checking the latest arrangements before setting off. The shop means you can pick up bait or tackle if you’ve forgotten a cheeky essential, but it’s still worth packing your usual hooklengths, leads, alarms and spare end tackle.

This is a strict catch-and-release venue. Fish must be returned quickly, with no sacking or retaining fish. Carp anglers need barbed or micro-barbed hooks, at least 15 lb or 0.35 mm line, a minimum 42-inch landing net and a large padded unhooking mat. Bait boats are allowed, while live bait and live fish are not; maggots are permitted. Spinning is allowed all year, with dead bait permitted from October to April, and any 30 lb-plus fish must be reported to a bailiff.

Before booking, check the current ticket arrangements carefully, especially the members-only setup outside the day-ticket season and the advance-booking requirement for Point, Woodlands and Island pegs. You’ll also need a valid Environment Agency rod licence. Dogs must be kept on a lead or close by, and Boys Pit fishing needs management approval, so don’t treat it as a normal day-ticket area.
