The full rundown on Hallcroft Fisheries
Hallcroft Fisheries is on Hallcroft Road in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and the site covers more than 60 acres according to the current operator. It’s a proper-sized complex, with six stillwater lakes plus a stretch of the River Idle. So there’s plenty to look at before you even get the gear out. Whether you’re after a match-style session or a more relaxed day chasing a few bites, there’s a fair bit of water to choose from.
The stillwaters are mixed coarse waters, with common carp, mirror carp, ghost carp, bream, tench, roach, rudd, perch and crucian carp listed among the residents. Moat Pool is the big match lake, with approximately 190 pegs, while Bridge Pool has around 84. Croft Pool has about 28 pegs, and River Ponds has roughly 28 pegs and is used for pleasure fishing. That gives you a decent spread of options, from a busy match venue to a quieter-looking pleasure water.
Reed Pool has approximately 48 pegs and includes larger platforms for disabled or elderly anglers. Canal Pool is the compact one, with about 20 pegs, a width of roughly 11–12 metres, a shallow far shelf and around 4 feet of water in the middle. That sort of layout should make it a handy place to start by plumbing up properly, checking the far shelf and keeping the feed nice and tidy. No need to chuck half the tackle shop in on the first drop.
Then there’s the River Idle, a small, fast-flowing river section running through the site. The listed species include pike, barbel, chub, dace, roach and gudgeon, so it’s a different game from the stillwaters. Take tackle that suits moving water, keep an eye on the flow and have a wander along the stretch before settling into a swim. A bit of watercraft will be worth more than blindly fishing the same rig everywhere.
The practical side looks pretty bob on too. The on-site tackle shop has fresh bait and is listed as open seven days a week, from 7:30am–5pm weekdays and 7am–5pm Saturdays and Sundays. There’s a café and licensed bar, plus toilets and showers. Camping, touring pitches, electric hook-ups and holiday accommodation are also available, with the holiday park advertised as open all year. Parking is reported behind the pegs on the stillwaters, which cuts down the faff when carrying kit.
Tickets are reportedly bought at the tackle shop before fishing. Published prices include Adult £6, OAP/concession £5 and Junior £4.50, while a separate current listing gives Adult £7 and Adult two rods £9, so check the ticket price and which waters are available before travelling. Older listed fishing hours finish at 8pm in summer or dusk in winter, and current night fishing shouldn’t be assumed. You’ll need a valid Environment Agency rod licence, under-16s need adult supervision, and the rules include barbless hooks, Hallcroft feed pellets, no braided lines, floating baits or method feeders, plus no keepnets outside matches. Matches can be booked or entered, so a quick call about pegs, bait limits and match activity is a smart move.

How we'd fish Moat Pool
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
Venue rule: Leadcore is banned here, so run it on a mono or tubing leader with the top bead set to release — never fixed.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.

How we'd fish River Ponds
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.

- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

Carp patrol the reed lines on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
carp
Solid PVA bag over the snaggy bits
With the reed lines and a busy bottom, a solid bag keeps the hook point masked on the drop and sat neatly in a little pile of bait however rough the lakebed is.
- Tie a short, stiff hooklink (4–6in) so it packs into the bag without kinking.
- Fill the bag with a damp crumb mix and pack it tight — loose bags spill on the cast.
- Nick a wafter or small pop-up on the hair so it settles over the mix, not under it.
- Cast a few yards short of the feature, recast every couple of hours with a fresh bag.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat. Perfect for fishing tight to the cover here.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.

How we'd fish Canal Pool

How we'd fish River Idle
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.

- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
barbel
Pellet and boilie for the lake barbel
Lake barbel feed hard and fight harder, and this lake runs alongside the river. Use a strong rod and line, and rest them properly in the net before release.
- Halibut pellet or small boilie over a bed of pellet.
- Strong hooklink and a size 10–12 hook.
- Never hold barbel out of water long — keep them in the net until they've recovered.
chub
Bread or worm tight to cover for chub
Chub sit under overhanging trees and snags and are cautious, so a quiet approach and a natural bait near cover catches them.
- Bread flake or lobworm on a size 8 hook with a link leger.
- Keep low and quiet on the bank.
- In summer, try a free-lined slug or floating crust.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
