The full rundown on Makins Fishery

Makins Fishery sits on Bazzard Road in Bramcote, near Nuneaton, with its waters spread across three phases. There’s plenty to get your head round before picking a peg, but that’s part of the appeal: this isn’t just one pond doing one job. Pleasure fishing, match bookings and longer sessions on Lake 1 all feature. One small wrinkle worth knowing: the fishery gives conflicting totals of 14 and 18 lakes, so don’t build your plans around a single headline count.

Lake 1 is the obvious starting point if bigger carp are what get you buzzing. At just under five acres with 53 pegs, it’s the largest of the waters detailed here. Makins lists carp to 35lb+, alongside bream, roach, tench, barbel and perch. That’s a fishery claim rather than a promise of a lump in your landing net, naturally. It also has its own ticket prices, including longer stays, so treat it separately when working out your day.

Elsewhere, there’s a cracking spread of water sizes. Lakes 2A/2B cover a combined 3.5 acres with 45 pegs, while Lake 5 has 54 pegs across 2.5 acres. Lake 3 and Avon each have 20 pegs on 1.5 acres. Lagoon, Paddock and Reptile give you smaller-water options, with Paddock specifically listing crucians and rudd. Those figures help you compare the waters, but they don’t tell you which peg is free or what’s on the munch that morning.

The practical bit is straightforward: buy your ticket at the Phase 1 shop before fishing, and don’t bank on paying by card beside your peg. Pleasure fishing is normally available daily unless otherwise stated. With match bookings also part of the setup, checking your intended water before setting off saves a bit of faff. The published opening hours supplied are for April only; they’re not confirmation of October hours or a year-round timetable.

Get the tackle and bait rules bob on before you load the car. Hooks must be barbless, landing nets are compulsory and nets need airing for at least ten minutes on arrival. Only Makins feed pellets are allowed. Floating baits and bait boats are out, and bread has a seasonal restriction. Fish go straight back unless you’re using a keepnet in an authorised competition. There’s a two-rod maximum, with an extra charge for the second rod.

Off the bank, there’s a bait shop and café, though their published April hours differ from the fishing hours. Touring and camping facilities include showers, toilets, an accessible bathroom, electricity and water points. Holiday lodges add kitchens, private parking and hot tubs if you fancy making more of the trip. Just keep the distinction clear: those accommodation facilities aren’t a blanket promise about access or amenities at every fishing peg.
