The full rundown on Fens Pools

Fens Pools sits near Pensnett and Brierley Hill, close to Lye in the West Midlands. It’s also known as Fens Pool Nature Reserve, and it has a much more natural feel than a tidy commercial fishery with a tackle shop, café and rows of numbered pegs. This is a mixed-use reserve, so expect a bit of exploring and a more relaxed, wild setting.

The reserve includes Grove Pool, Middle Pool and Fens Pool, along with smaller ponds and connected water bodies. The pools were built as reservoirs for the Stourbridge Canal, and the wider protected site covers 37.6 hectares as a biological SSSI. It’s a cracking backdrop, with open water, swamp, fen, grassland and scrub all wrapped into the reserve.

Carp and pike are reported here, although a complete current fish-stock list isn’t available. That gives the place a bit of mystery for anglers who enjoy working out a venue rather than being handed every detail on a plate. If you’re after a particular species or approach, it’s well worth contacting the Canal & River Trust before packing the gear.

Fishing is based around an annual permit. Adult permits are reported at £16.50, while concessions are £8.50 for unwaged people and those able to show qualifying proof. Children under 16 are reported not to need a fishing permit. Permits are available from The Dell Stadium in Pensnett, so check the latest arrangements before making the trip.

There’s a firm close season from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, and fishing isn’t permitted during that window. No current day-ticket price, night-fishing permission or booking system is listed, so don’t assume you can roll up for a cheeky overnight session or reserve a swim online. For a first visit, keep the kit versatile, have a wander before settling in and ask about any local access or fishing changes.

The reserve itself is open 24 hours, with public parking at Chapel Street, Pensnett and additional parking near the wardens’ office. There are benches, shaded and unshaded grass, paths and water-based resting platforms, which is handy if you’re having a proper look around or taking younger anglers along. There are no toilets at the reserve, so plan around that before setting off.

The wardens’ base is reported open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, at the junction of Pensnett Road and Blewitt Street. With three named pools and extra connected water, a sensible first session is about finding comfortable access, watching the water and keeping the approach simple. Take your usual float or ledgering options, avoid overloading the barrow and check the latest fishing details with the Canal & River Trust before clipping up.
