The full rundown on Ivy House Lakes

Ivy House Lakes gives you plenty to choose from without pretending every lake does the same job. This 22-acre complex on Whitehill Lane, Grittenham, has seven named waters, covering small-carp fishing, mixed coarse, club matches and longer carp sessions. Pop SN15 4JU into the satnav. The big decision comes before you load the car: are you after a straightforward day on one rod, a shared peg with a youngster, or a booked carp session with the bivvy?

For F1s and small carp, Heron is the obvious starting point. It has 24 pegs across 2.5 acres, with level paths and pegs, and takes club bookings throughout the year subject to availability. Kingfisher and Moorhen offer a different shape: both are canal-style waters, roughly 1.5m deep, holding bream, tench, perch, roach and carp to 10lb. Kingfisher has 15 pegs over two acres; Moorhen has nine over 1.5 acres. That's a useful choice for anglers who fancy mixed species rather than making the whole day about carp.

Old Match Lake adds another 18 pegs, with carp to 10lb and silver fish. Peters Pond keeps things smaller, at half an acre with five double pegs specifically suited to beginners and adult-child pairs. Those shared pegs are a proper practical detail when you're helping a youngster. These five waters share the same £10 one-rod ticket, with a maximum eight-hour session, plus an adult-and-under-13 offer at £10 total with one rod each. Ordinary concessions aren't offered on those waters.

Willow steps things up for experienced carp anglers. Its 2.5 acres have 15 large bivvy pegs, a large island and a maximum depth of 1.8m. The advertised carp run to 24lb, with bream, roach, perch and chub also present. The island is the standout named feature here, but don't confuse bigger pegs with a casual turn-up arrangement: every peg must be booked and paid for beforehand. Individual carp-care kit is required, including a minimum 26-inch landing net and a padded sided unhooking mat.

For a private session with mates, Specimen Lake accepts whole-lake bookings only, with a maximum of four anglers. It holds carp over 30lb and requires experienced carp anglers with full carp-care equipment. Weekday and weekend hire have different prices and session windows, so settle those details before arranging time off. It's a different proposition from grabbing a mixed-coarse day ticket, and the exclusive booking is the key attraction.

The practical bits include a lakeside café, toilets, fishing platforms, a tackle and bait shop, and parking close to the lakes. At the entrance, use the top intercom button and check in at the shop. One timing detail is worth getting bob on: although general fishing hours extend to 18:00, day-ticket anglers must leave their pegs by 16:00. Willow also advertises its own day-ticket window. Plan around your ticket, not just the general hours.
