River Severn – Grimley
Grimley is Birmingham Anglers Association’s bit of the Middle Severn downstream of Holt Fleet Bridge, where the river widens and deepens. Chub, barbel and a resident shoal of large bream give you plenty to think about over a brew.

River Severn
River Severn – Grimley
The lowdown
- This is Middle Severn fishing, with Grimley sitting downstream of Holt Fleet Bridge. BAA runs the stretch, so it’s Association membership you’ll want sorted before heading down with the rods and landing net.
- The river opens out here, getting both wider and deeper. That’s the main bit of bank talk to keep in mind when planning your session: give the depth some thought rather than treating it as shallow-water fishing.
- Average depths are six to eight feet — a useful starting point, not a promise for every swim. Take that as your broad picture of the stretch rather than an exact depth beneath your float.
- Chub and barbel are both specifically named for Grimley. They’re proper Severn targets, but there’s no need to dress that up with promised catches: those are the fish BAA actually highlights for this water.
- Fancy putting bream on the agenda? The upper reaches hold a resident shoal of large fish. That’s the clearest location pointer here, and a handy one when deciding which part of the stretch interests you.
- Getting there means heading through Grimley village, past the Wagon Wheel Inn, then taking the track down to the BAA car park. Save the map pin before setting off and cut out a bit of faff.
- Keep this one a daytime trip: night fishing is prohibited. Membership also finishes on 31 December 2026 regardless of when you buy it, so bear that fixed end date in mind before sorting your ticket.
Methods: With average depths of six to eight feet, checking the depth of your chosen swim is a sensible starting point. For choosing a target area, the upper reaches are the named location for the resident bream shoal.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
