River Severn – Ladyham

Ladyham is a short Birmingham Anglers Association stretch of the Worcestershire Severn, with roughly 25 pegs and an easy-paced flow. Chub, bream and occasional large barbel are on the list, with winter roach fishing getting a proper nod too.

The lowdown

  • This is a short bit of Severn, with approximately 25 pegs rather than miles of bank to work through. The official map marks fishing on the eastern bank, so keep that map handy when sorting out your spot.
  • The flow is described as easy-paced. That’s the key bit of character here: think about presenting a bait steadily, rather than assuming you’ll be tackling a hard-pushing swim just because it’s the Severn.
  • Published depths run from 4 to 8 feet. There’s enough variation there to make checking your chosen swim worthwhile before settling on a float set-up or deciding how you want to fish the bottom.
  • Chub and bream are specifically named for Ladyham. They give you a couple of clear targets for the session; a feeder approach is worth considering, rather than treating every peg as a barbel-only job.
  • Occasional large barbel are mentioned too. The important word is occasional — a cracking possibility, but not a promise of a busy session or a reason to overlook the other fish named here.
  • Winter roach fishing gets a particular mention from BAA. If you fancy a cold-weather session, that’s the seasonal steer to keep in mind, with trotting an approach to consider against the conditions on the day.
  • Access comes down a woodland track from the Boreley Lane junction. Watch the gully on the left as you head down, and shut the field gate behind you. No need for avoidable faff before fishing.
  • Parking is marked beside the stretch, and vehicles may travel along the riverbank when conditions allow. A cheeky night session needs planning too: membership alone won’t cover it, as a separate advance permit is required.

Methods: Consider trotting for the winter roach or a feeder approach for chub and bream, matching the set-up to your chosen swim’s depth and flow. If targeting the occasional large barbel, tackle up accordingly.
