Goosey at Olney is a proper varied bit of the Great Ouse, with four distinct sections: Pensioner’s, the main river, Rushie and the backwater. It’s run by Olney & Clifton Fishing Association, with predator water, perchy features and quieter tench and chub swims in the mix.

Elton Fishery is a limited, members-only syndicate stretch on the River Nene, run by Peterborough & District Angling Association. It runs from a field above the backwater to Nassington Road bridge, with the backwater and part of the Willow Book included.

The Several Fishery is a DSJAC-run day-ticket stretch on the River Welland, running from Market Deeping through Deeping St James to Kenulphs Stone. It’s a proper club-owned section with tickets covering any DSJAC Nene or Welland river venue on the day.

A proper flowing Great Ouse backwater from below Four Gate sluice at California down to the Bailey Bridge, or Black Bridge. It’s coarse fishing with very little boat traffic — bob on for a quieter session around Houghton and the Hemingfords.

A cracking 1.5-mile slice of the Welland, starting at Harringworth Viaduct and split into upper, middle and lower sections. It’s secluded, varied and mainly a wild brown trout fly-fishing job, with some proper depth up top.

Finding somewhere to fish near you

Around Nottingham, for example, you'll find canal stretches, the tidal-free middle Trent and plenty of commercial lakes within a short drive.

Every listing tells you the stuff you actually need before you load the car: what's in each lake or stretch, whether it's a day ticket, club or syndicate water, the house rules and what a ticket costs when we last checked. Rules and prices change, so always give the fishery or club a quick shout before you go.

Rivers, canals and stillwaters fish completely differently. Lakes reward a bit of watercraft and steady feeding; rivers are all about flow, depth and level, so we show live river levels where we can. Use the water-type and fish filters to narrow it down, then open a venue for the lake-by-lake or stretch-by-stretch lowdown.
