The full rundown on Grand Union Canal – Aylesbury Arm Stretch

The Aylesbury Arm is a proper long canal stretch controlled by The Tring Anglers Association. It branches off the Grand Union Canal near Marsworth, then winds through Marsworth, Wilstone, Puttenham, Buckland and Aston Clinton towards Aylesbury. So, plenty of water to explore rather than a one-peg lake session. You can fish it year-round, with the day running from one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset.

This is canal fishing, plain and simple. The centre track is up to roughly 4ft deep, boat traffic is moderate and there are numerous far-bank features to pick apart. Those far-bank shelves and bits of cover are well worth a good look before you chuck anything in. On a new canal, spend a few minutes watching the water, checking the depth and working out how boats are moving. It can save a fair bit of faff later.

Carp are the headline attraction, with fish present to approximately 30lb. Puttenham is identified as a carp hotspot around the moorings below Bridge 9, giving carp anglers a clear area to investigate. Floating crust and dog biscuit are noted baits for a cheeky surface approach, while corn and worms offer more traditional options. Keep things simple, stay alert and be ready to adjust if the fish are not showing themselves.

There is plenty here for anglers who fancy more than carp. Chub are present to around 5lb 6oz, tench to roughly 7lb, bream to about 5lb, perch to approximately 3lb and roach to around 1lb 4oz. Gudgeon are also reported around Puttenham. Redhouse to Buckland, covering Bridges 7–8, is noted for quality bream, so that section deserves a look if a bream session is on the cards. Pack a few different bait options and let the signs in front of you guide the plan.

Access is handy at several points along the arm. Wilstone has accessible pegs and disabled parking, while Dixons Gap at Marsworth has disabled access and carp fishing. Parking is available at Marsworth Reservoir, Dixons Gap, Wilstone, Puttenham, Buckland and Redhouse. It is not secure, though, so leave valuables at home or out of sight. Before setting up, check the latest details with the bailiff or The Tring Anglers Association, especially if you are unsure about the best parking spot or the local approach.

The rules are important and easy enough to remember. Night fishing is not allowed on the Aylesbury Arm. Stay at least 25 metres from locks, 15 metres from moored boats and away from signed overhead power lines. Carry valid membership or day-ticket proof, and keep within the two-rod maximum. With a sensible amount of kit, a bit of watercraft and a willingness to move, this arm offers a cracking mix of surface carp, quality bream and proper mixed canal fishing.
