The full rundown on Alvaston and Osmaston Park Angling Club Waters

Alvaston Park Lake sits beside Meadow Lane in Alvaston, Derby, tucked into the big 85-acre Alvaston Park. It’s a council stillwater with coarse fishing at its heart, managed by The Earl of Harrington’s Angling Club. A proper urban park venue, then, with public paths, car parking and plenty going on around the water. The exact acreage of the lake itself isn’t published, so it’s worth having a good look round before choosing your swim.

Carp are present, with historical club reports mentioning both mirror carp and common carp. Pike have also been reported, so there’s more in the lake than just a couple of carp rods and a flask of tea. Angling listings describe Alvaston Park Lake as a coarse and carp venue, which gives you a fair steer on the sort of tackle and bait to consider.

For a first session, keep things sensible and mobile. Have a stroll, watch the water and look for signs of fish before chucking everything in. A couple of adaptable rods, a small selection of coarse and carp baits, and enough kit to cover changing conditions should do the job nicely. The usual new-venue faff applies: ask the club about productive areas, bait limits, current fish behaviour and any swims that are temporarily out of use.

Access isn’t unrestricted public fishing, so you’ll need the correct club ticket. The 2026/27 Adult Season Ticket costs £45 and covers the River Derwent plus the listed club stillwaters, including Alvaston Park Lake. Concession tickets for anglers aged 65+ or disabled anglers are £30, while juniors aged 12–16 pay £5. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required as well.

Just fancy a one-off day? Adult day tickets are £7, with junior day tickets at £1 for ages 12–16. These cover Alvaston Park Lake and the other listed eligible stillwaters, but not Heatherton Pond or Farnah Lake. Tickets are available online through The Earl of Harrington’s Angling Club, or from Fishermania, Nathan’s Premier Angling Centre and Angling Direct Derby. New season-ticket holders also need to allow £5 for a gate and car-park key.

Fishing is normally from sunrise to sunset. Night fishing is a different kettle of fish, requiring Premium Membership or the applicable night permit, and it isn’t allowed on a day ticket. The club has previously required advance booking, limited the number of night anglers at Alvaston Lake and allowed up to three rods, so check the current setup before planning a nocturnal mission. Closures can also happen for matches, spawning, fishery management or maintenance. The lake reopened after a spawning closure on 8 May 2025, and a further temporary closure ran from 18 June to 11 August 2025. Check before travelling, pack light enough for the level paths, and you’ll be set for a tidy session.
