The full rundown on Yateley West Fishery
Yateley West Fishery is a private specimen-carp complex near Yateley, Hampshire. The venue is made up of Car Park Lake, North Lake, Split Lake and Pads Lake, with bookings and operations managed through Yateley Angling Centre.
Car Park Lake is the smaller, tightly limited option. It currently holds about 30 carp, with original character fish mixed with newer stock approaching 40lb+. Membership is limited to 35 anglers, so this one is aimed squarely at the specialist carp angler after a quieter, focused setup.
North Lake is the biggest named water at around 10.7 acres. It is mature, with bars and islands to pick apart, and holds an estimated 110–120 carp. The reported stock includes two fish around 40lb, six over 35lb and roughly 25 over 30lb. Plenty of proper lumps to go at.
Split Lake covers about 8.5 acres and brings a bit more variety. Alongside around 90 carp, including roughly 10 over 30lb, it contains large catfish and tench. The catfish are reported to reach beyond 70lb, with an 80lb fish possible, while tench have reportedly gone over 11lb. A cheeky mixed-species angle, then, rather than a straight carp-only job.
Pads Lake is the group-booking water. It is mature, averages about 5 feet deep and has an extensive gravel-bar system. Around 80 carp are present, mostly from the 1998 Fishers Pond strain stocking, with carp averaging over 20lb and more than 30 different fish reported over 30lb. The reported top weight is over 40lb.
The Pads rules are properly specialist-friendly but not one to wing. Up to three rods are allowed, with minimum 18lb mono main line and no braided main line. You’ll need a suitable padded unhooking mat, weigh sling and minimum 42-inch soft-mesh landing net. Fish must be returned promptly, with carp sacks banned.
Pads bait rules change through the year: boilies and pellets are allowed from 1 March to 31 October, while zig rigs and maggots are allowed from 1 November to the end of February. Bait boats and baiting poles are permitted if used sensibly. Arrive no earlier than 09:30, take your swim from 10:00 and leave by 10:00 on departure day. Toilet facilities are provided, and dogs are allowed if kept with their owner and cleaned up after.

carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.

Big hookbaits after dark for the cats
Catfish come out at night and like strong smells. A big halibut pellet or fish-based bait over a small bed of pellet is the usual approach.
- Fish strong — 20lb+ line and a big strong hook.
- Use an unhooking mat and a big net; cats are long and heavy.
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.

How we'd fish Pads Lake
carp
Solid PVA bag over the snaggy bits
With the lily beds and a busy bottom, a solid bag keeps the hook point masked on the drop and sat neatly in a little pile of bait however rough the lakebed is.
- Tie a short, stiff hooklink (4–6in) so it packs into the bag without kinking.
- Fill the bag with a damp crumb mix and pack it tight — loose bags spill on the cast.
- Nick a wafter or small pop-up on the hair so it settles over the mix, not under it.
- Cast a few yards short of the feature, recast every couple of hours with a fresh bag.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
Venue rule: Leadcore is banned here, so run it on a mono or tubing leader with the top bead set to release — never fixed.

- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
catfish
Pads Lake
Venue rule: Leadcore is banned here, so run it on a mono or tubing leader with the top bead set to release — never fixed.
carp
Light baiting tight to the lily beds
Carp patrol the lily beds on most venues.
Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Yateley West is a proper private specimen-carp complex near Yateley, with four very different waters. Car Park, North and Split are membership waters, while Pads Lake is booked by visiting groups through Yateley Angling Centre.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
