The full rundown on Bake Lakes
Bake Lakes near Trerulefoot, Saltash, is a proper nine-lake-and-pond complex spread across roughly 30 acres. There’s a cracking mix of fishing here, from specimen carp waters and pike through to silvers, tench and beginner-friendly ponds. So whether you fancy hunting a lump or just want a relaxed day with a float rod, there’s plenty to get your head around.
The big draw is the specimen side. Caesar’s Palace holds carp from about 15lb into the mid-30lb range, with reported carp over 30lb making it the obvious big-fish water. Luxor is another serious option, with carp to about 30lb and bream to roughly 6lb. Caesar’s has limited pegs, so booking ahead is sensible rather than turning up and hoping for a swim.
Both specimen lakes allow three rods, with day and 24-hour tickets available. Night fishing is allowed, and anglers can bring their own bivvy. As ever, sort the boring-but-important bits before setting off: check availability, ask what the current booking arrangements are, and make sure your bivvy, unhooking gear and tackle are all suitable for a proper overnight session.
For a more varied day, the multi-lake waters cover Dunes, Flamingo, Treasure Island, the Canal and Snag Alley. Dunes is around 1.5 acres and suits a mixed silverfish and coarse approach. Flamingo is roughly 1 acre, with carp to about 15lb and tench. Treasure Island has three islands and contains carp, tench, bream and silverfish, giving it a few cheeky features to think about when choosing a swim.
The Canal contains carp around 2–5lb, while Snag Alley is a small, mature water with tench and silverfish. These are more about a traditional coarse session than chasing a PB, and the multi-lake ticket gives you scope to move around if one swim isn’t doing the business. Take a simple mixed approach, watch the margins and be ready to switch tactics rather than getting glued to one idea all day.
The Emperor ponds are aimed at less-experienced anglers, with roach, carp, crucians, tench and other silverfish on the list. That makes them a gentle starting point for newer anglers or anyone wanting a straightforward mixed bag. There’s a tackle and bait shop on site, rod hire is £7 per day including rod, reel, tackle box, net and chair, and parking is available at all lakes. Pigout cafe is listed as open Wednesday–Sunday, 8am–4pm, with three toilets offering disabled access. Just remember your Environment Agency rod licence for the coarse lakes, barbless hooks up to size 6, a landing net and unhooking mat.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Caesar’s Palace
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
Venue rule: Fixed leads are banned here, so use a lead clip set to drop the lead or an inline lead.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.

How we'd fish Treasure Island
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.

roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
crucian
Delicate float for crucians
Crucian bites are tiny dips and lifts, so a sensitive float shotted right down is what catches them.
- Fish a small insert waggler or pole float over-depth by an inch.
- Corn, maggot or a 4mm pellet on a size 16–18.
- Strike at any small movement — crucians rarely bury the float.
Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.
