The full rundown on The Oaks Lakes

The Oaks Lakes near Thirsk isn’t short of choice. The operator advertises ten lakes and over 400 pegs, with match fishing, pleasure sessions and a specimen option all in the mix. It opened in 1994 with Willows Lake, and that original water still has its own distinct role. The main thing is picking the right lake for your day, rather than assuming every peg is available for the same sort of fishing.

For the match crowd, Ash, Beech and Sycamore are the dedicated waters. They have 24, 26 and 30 pegs respectively, and each is approximately 40m wide. All three contain common and mirror carp, F1s, ide and barbel. That gives you a clear steer on their mixed commercial character, but don’t confuse their match-only status with somewhere you can simply settle into a spare swim for a pleasure session. Ring about arrangements before loading the motor.

There’s plenty elsewhere for a more relaxed day. Alders, Cedar, Maple and Poplars all accommodate match and pleasure fishing, while Firs and Oaks are pleasure waters. Published depths put several around the 5ft mark: Alders and Maple average 5ft, Cedar averages 5–6ft, and Poplars is approximately 5ft centrally. Firs has 25 pegs and a maximum depth of 5ft. Those figures help with preparation, though an average depth isn’t a shortcut to knowing what’s in front of your peg.

Oaks is a cracking one to consider if variety matters more than chasing just one species. Its listed inhabitants include carp, crucians, bream, tench, roach, rudd, perch, ide, gudgeon, barbel and golden orfe. Willows takes the specimen-pleasure brief, with room for 30 anglers and approximately 7ft of water. Its carp include grass, ghost, common and mirror varieties, alongside other coarse fish. Booking there is by appointment, and the heavier tackle requirements make it a different proposition from packing light for a general coarse session.

Sort the rules before you sort the bait bag and save yourself some faff. Only fishery feed pellets are permitted, groundbait must go through feeders or pole cups, and hooks must be barbless—not microbarbed. You’re limited to two rods and need an assembled landing net. Match anglers also need dry nets, at least two keepnets and no more than 70lb in each. Willows adds its own net, mat, rod and line requirements, so check your kit against those before setting off.

Off the bank, there’s a large café, tackle shop and a 25-pitch caravan and camping park. Three car parks serve Ash, Beech and Sycamore. For satnav, use the fishery’s recommended YO7 3BJ rather than its postal postcode, YO7 3BG. General fishing enquiries go to the fishery; Willows appointments use the fishery. If you’re considering fishing after dark, ask directly about availability and charges rather than treating the evening ticket as permission to stay overnight.
