The full rundown on Northampton Angling Club Lakes
Northampton Nene Angling Club — formerly often called Northampton Angling Club — gives you plenty to get your head around. The club runs several still waters, along with sections of the River Nene, Great Ouse and Grand Union Canal. Handy stuff if you like mixing up your fishing rather than doing the same old plod every session. There’s a fair bit of variety here, from traditional mixed coarse water to proper carp fishing.
Silver Lake is a four-acre purpose-built lake on the edge of Wappenham. Depths range from roughly 2ft down to 14ft, so it pays to spend a few minutes looking things over before getting clipped up. Check the margins, work out where the deeper water is and plan your first move around the conditions on the day. On a new venue, a simple plumb around can save a load of faff later.
The stock is a tidy mixed bag: carp, tench, bream, barbel, roach, perch and orfe. Carp run into the 20s, roach are approaching 2lb and perch go to around 4lb. That gives you options, whether you fancy targeting a carp, building a net of silvers or having a cheeky go for a bigger perch. Take a balanced selection of gear and keep your approach flexible until you see what the swim is telling you.
Canons Ashby adds two established estate lakes with a clear split between them. Top Lake is the carp water, with carp reported to 30lb-plus. Bottom Lake is the mixed coarse and silver-fish option, holding bream, carp, tench, crucian carp, roach and perch. If you’re after lumps, the Top Lake is the obvious place to focus. For a more traditional session, Bottom Lake looks the better fit on paper.
Access is mainly through club membership. Still waters and most river sections are members-only, while the £6 day membership applies only to the Grand Union Canal and River Nene town-centre waters. Silver Lake has no day tickets. Its gate code is supplied in the club membership book, so sort the admin before setting off. The 2026/27 full annual membership is £45, concession membership is £30 for anglers aged 65 or over and qualifying special-ticket holders, and junior membership is £10 for ages 13 to 17.
Silver Lake has no closed season, but fishing is sunrise to sunset and night fishing is not allowed. Full members may night-fish only where the individual fishery rules permit it. The club also bans removing fish, using boats or kayaks, crayfish trapping and magnet fishing. A maximum of two rods applies where the individual fishery allows it. No camping, barbecues, open fires, swim reservation or unattended bivvies either, and you can’t stay more than 24 hours in one swim. Keep the kit sensible, check the individual water rules and you’ll be bob on.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Silver Lake
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.

How we'd fish Meadow Lakes
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.

How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
Silver Lake
carp

In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.

Canons Ashby Top Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.

crucian
Delicate float for crucians
Crucian bites are tiny dips and lifts, so a sensitive float shotted right down is what catches them.
- Fish a small insert waggler or pole float over-depth by an inch.
- Corn, maggot or a 4mm pellet on a size 16–18.
- Strike at any small movement — crucians rarely bury the float.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Northampton Nene Angling Club, formerly known as Northampton Angling Club, runs a spread of members’ still waters alongside River Nene, Great Ouse and Grand Union Canal sections. Silver Lake and Canons Ashby are the best-detailed waters in the checked facts, with proper mixed fishing and some chunky carp on the books.”
