The full rundown on Hayton Lakes

Fancy a mixed bag, a match-style session or a proper carp trip? Hayton Lakes gives you all three angles on one approximately 100-acre complex. There are seven lakes here, on Smeath Lane near Retford, Nottinghamshire. The useful bit is that they don't all follow the same format: six offer day tickets, while Gadwall has its own membership and booking arrangements. Pick your water first, then sort the ticket.

For variety, Kingfisher is the standout on paper. Its seven acres and 85 pegs hold chub, F1 carp, mirror carp, bream, barbel, roach and perch. That's a cracking spread if your idea of a good session isn't just carp, carp and more carp. Pintail and Little Grebe also mix carp with barbel, bream and roach, with F1s additionally listed in Pintail. These are the three waters to weigh up for a mixed coarse or match-style day.

Prefer to keep your attention on carp? Wigeon and Shoveler both list commons and mirrors, with 18 and 25 pegs respectively. Goldeneye adds perch to that carp mix and has just 10 pegs across two acres. Gadwall is the specimen option, with common and mirror carp across 3.5 acres and 19 pegs. There's no need to dress that up with promises of lumps or a guaranteed PB: the distinction here is the dedicated specimen setup.

There's a handy amount of flexibility over session length, too. Night fishing is available on Gadwall, Goldeneye, Kingfisher, Shoveler and Wigeon, but you need to book ahead and overnight anglers must be at least 18. Gadwall also needs annual membership before your first session booking, so it isn't a turn-up-and-cast water. On the other six lakes, day tickets can be bought at the office or on the bank, although booking a day session is recommended.

Before loading the car, give the timings a proper look. Hayton is open throughout the year, but the website advises checking seasonal gate changes before travelling. Last admission is two hours before the gates close, and the ticket office has its own shorter opening window. For bookings, ring Toby with the fishery between 08:00 and 18:00 daily. Don't rely on a cheeky text: the contact page says messages aren't answered.

Tackle-wise, get the basics bob on before choosing your swim. General rules require barbless hooks, with barbless or micro-barbed allowed on Gadwall. All nets must be dipped and every fish returned alive. Gadwall also specifies minimum line and net sizes, a cradle or padded mat, and a carp-care kit. Check the bait and keepnet restrictions as well. A quick bit of preparation beats arriving with the wrong kit and spending your fishing time sorting avoidable faff.
